Ο Δημήτρης Γαβαλάς είναι Αναπληρωτής Καθηγητής στη Ναυτιλία και την Εφοδιαστική Αλυσίδα Λιμένων, με εκτενή διδακτική και ερευνητική εμπειρία σε πανεπιστήμια στην Ελλάδα, την Κίνα και τη Γαλλία. Ειδικεύεται στη ναυτιλία, την εφοδιαστική αλυσίδα και το διεθνές εμπόριο. Έχει επιβλέψει πολυάριθμες διδακτορικές και μεταδιδακτορικές εργασίες και έχει δημοσιεύσει πληθώρα άρθρων σε διεθνή επιστημονικά περιοδικά.

Είναι μέλος επιστημονικών επιτροπών, κριτής σε κορυφαία περιοδικά και έχει συμμετάσχει ενεργά σε διεθνή συνέδρια και ερευνητικά δίκτυα. Το έργο του επικεντρώνεται στην ενίσχυση της στρατηγικής σκέψης, της καινοτομίας και της βιωσιμότητας στον ευρύτερο χώρο της ναυτιλίας, των μεταφορών και της γαλάζιας οικονομίας.
