Ο Δημήτρης Γαβαλάς είναι Αναπλ. Καθηγητής στο Τμήμα Διαχείρισης Λιμένων & Ναυτιλίας, Σχολή Οικονομικών & Πολιτικών Επιστημών, ΕΚΠΑ. Το γνωστικά-ερευνητικά του αντικείμενα είναι η εφοδιαστική αλυσίδα στους λιμένες και τη ναυτιλία, η χρηματοδότηση της εφοδιαστικής αλυσίδας, οι συνδυασμένες μεταφορές και το διεθνές εμπόριο. Επίσης, διατηρεί θέση Επισκέπτη Καθηγητή σε Πανεπιστημιακά Τμήματα στην Ελλάδα και το εξωτερικό, μεταξύ των οποίων Audencia Business School (Γαλλία), Shanghai Maritime University (Κίνα), Διεθνές Πανεπιστήμιο Ελλάδας και Ελληνικό Ανοικτό Πανεπιστήμιο.

Ο Δ. Γαβαλάς κατέχει Διδακτορικό Δίπλωμα (Ph.D.) στη Ναυτιλιακή Χρηματοοικονομική  (2015) από το Πανεπιστήμιο Αιγαίου, καθώς και Μεταπτυχιακό Δίπλωμα (M.Sc.) στη Διεθνή Ναυτιλία (2006) από το University of Plymouth, Βρετανία και Πτυχίο Οικονομικών (2002) από το Πανεπιστήμιο Πειραιώς. Πριν ακολουθήσει πανεπιστημιακή καριέρα, είχε πολυετή επαγγελματική εμπειρία σε διάφορες διοικητικές θέσεις ευθύνης στον ιδιωτικό τομέα, με εξειδίκευση στη ναυτιλιακή τραπεζική, χρηματοοικονομική διοικητική, επενδυτική τραπεζική, διαχείριση επενδύσεων χαρτοφυλακίου, μακροοικονομική ανάλυση ναυτιλιακών δεικτών και εταιρική κοινωνική ευθύνη.

Ο Δ. Γαβαλάς συμμετέχει τακτικά σε διεθνή επιστημονικά συνέδρια παρουσιάζοντας μελέτες που άπτονται των επιστημονικών του πεδίων, ενώ δημοσιεύει συστηματικά επιστημονικές μελέτες και άρθρα σε αναγνωρισμένα διεθνή ακαδημαϊκά περιοδικά.
